Olivia Gelso

Olivia's Story:

“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” African Proverb

Olivia Geloso (age 15, student at LCS) In the summer of 2018, Olivia got the chance to visit the Maasai Mara.

While she was there she met some locals, got to bead with the Mamas, helped build a school, and also sit down and talk with some girls from a local school

What impacted Olivia the most on her trip was how determined these girls were with their schooling. Most of them speak at least three languages, the classes they take are much more advanced then what most students here in Canada are required to take at their age, and they all knew exactly where they were headed in the future and what they wanted to get out of their schooling. Not only are they dedicated to their education but they love their education. Not all children living in the Maasai Mara are able to attend school, it is very expensive and sometimes takes a long time to get to and from school. The girls Olivia met know that they are privileged to be attending school and they are overjoyed to be there.

This experience inspired Olivia to take action. She was overwhelmed by the happiness of these girls and wanted to make more girls feel that way. When she returned from this experience not only did she come back with amazing new memories and knowledge, but she returned with the goal to pay for another girl’s tuition so that they can get a great education without having to worry about the cost.

With the help of her family, she has done many things in order to fundraise including making and selling cards, bake sales, and selling hand made crafts.
