Susan's Story :
The Maiden is long gone. The Mother has faded into the background. I am well into the Third Age and life is pretty good.
My husband and I retired from careers we loved and moved from Oakville to Trent Hills in 2014. Gary was ready, but to me, our relocation was about opening doors to another chapter in my life. As
we arrived as permanent residents, I launched my fitness studio, Love It Fitness. I also signed on with CKOL, the community radio station, as a program host and spent three years there.
I had a vision of what my life here would be like. It wasn’t like that at all. With a background in media, marketing, finance, fitness and municipal government, my prior life was full with a challenging job, vast network, strong friendships and a sense of community belonging. I landed in Trent Hills with none of those things. What was I seeking? The opportunity to use the disparate collection of skills I’d honed over a lifetime to shape purpose and meaning for me, while establishing relationships and making a positive difference in the lives of others.
A flourishing Zumba studio and Forte, an online magazine and live workshop platform for women, are the fruits of my journey thus far. I feed my soul with dance, teaching and the written word, and strive to empower others through health, fitness, joy, camaraderie and support. There is friendship, a network and community here now.
The third age is a time of freedom, a time of great power and great loss, a time in life when new directions are born and new strengths discovered.
This is the final act. If you are there, celebrate the woman you have become and what is happening for women in today’s world. Share your experience and your wisdom. Make a difference.
If you aren’t there yet, may you have a joyful ride full of achievement, love and sisterhood.
