Stephanie's Story :
I’ve always tended to be modest about my accomplishments so writing about myself isn’t my strong suit. I’m honoured and humbled to have my colleagues at Victorian Order of Nurses nominate me for this project.
With two beautiful children and a wonderful husband, life is always busy. My life before the pandemic seemed to be a constant stream of hockey games, unicorns, budgets and financial statements. Recently, it became homeschooling, mini-stick games, crafts, and of course more financials statements. While there have been plenty of ups and downs, I’ve learned a few things, including that teaching often requires herculean amounts of patience and that sometimes you just have to embrace the chaos.
I’m a by the numbers sort of person so a career in accounting has always been the most natural choice for me. Over the years I’ve worked in many roles, from bookkeeper to payroll to auditor to finance manager. I worked in public accounting before coming to work for VON. Working for VON has allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and go farther in my career. It also gives me a sense that even though I work in the background of an organization like VON, the work that I do helps to ensure that our essential workers can provide care to help keep people healthy and safe in their homes.
During the unprecedented times we are in, I’m never been prouder to work for an organization like VON. The year 2020 has posed so many challenges and the staff of VON have risen to meet them. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the landscape of the world in so many ways, but it is inspiring to be part of an organization that has stepped up to make sure people still receive the care that they need.
