Katie McVetyFire Alarm Operator – Peterborough Fire Services
To say that I was completely shocked when I was nominated for this project would be an understatement.
Me? Inspiring someone?
I’m the nameless voice you reach on the other end of the phone when you have an emergency and need help.
You don’t see me.
You don’t know who I am.
No, my job cannot be the reason.
I remember a friend once asking me, “Kate, what makes you the way that you are? You put yourself out there and you push yourself to do hard things, and you realize that you’re probably going to fall flat on your face, but you also know that you’re going to pick yourself up and that you’re going to be ok. How do you just know that you can do that?”
I had never really thought about it before, but the answer came to me immediately; “No one has ever convinced me that I couldn’t.”
Maybe this belief, above all else, is what is inspiring to others.
I choose to spread the idea that we are all capable of creating the best version of our lives, and even if we stumble on our way to it, we are still going to be just fine.
No matter what.
And I think that there is something both comforting and very motivating in that knowledge.
You really never know what your impact on people will be.
I sure don’t.
But in both my personal and professional life, I am a voice reassuring you, even when things are going terribly wrong, that I believe that you’re going to be alright.
And maybe that’s just inspiring enough.
