Her Story

Jenn Evans

Victorian Order of Nurses Peterborough-Victoria-Haliburton

Jenn's Story :

I grew up in a small village east of Brighton, Ontario. I was very fortunate to meet my lifelong friends while growing up in Smithfield. I married my high school sweetheart and together we have two beautiful children.

From a young age, I had a passion to work with the senior population. I always enjoyed the company of my grandfather and spent a lot of time with him. He was full of adventure and had a great sense of humor. After I finished high school, I enrolled in the PSW program and began working in a long term care facility in which I worked for 15 years. I loved my job and was able to meet so many great people!

My mom was diagnosed with Frontal Lobe Dementia at the young age of 58 and this changed my life. At that time of my life I had two young children and worked full time. This made it difficult for me to be able to support my mom at home. Shortly after my mom’s diagnosis she went into a long term care home. This was something I struggled with for a very long time, always wondering – ‘What if we had been able to keep her home longer?’ Would things have been different?

After 15 years in LTC I decided to go back to school for Community and Social Services. I decided to pursue a job in activation with the VON Adult Day Program. I finally found where my heart lies and am able to be a part of something that is so positive! To be able to help families stay together and clients remain in their homes as long as possible. To be able to give clients a space where they can feel independent and make connections with others who are facing similar struggles. It provides a place where they have a new sense of purpose and I am able to spend my day with people who can share their life experience and knowledge.

I’m truly blessed to be given the opportunity to work in such a great environment with others that share my same passion!
