Janice's Story :
I grew up in the London Ontario area, but moved to Peterborough with my husband and two children in 1977. Our son now lives in BC with his family, and our daughter and her family
stayed in the Peterborough area. We have three beautiful grandchildren, now all grown up as well.
In 2013, about one year after my retirement, I was recruited to the VON Board and am currently the Treasurer. In my position as Director of Finance for United Way of Peterborough and District for 25 years, I was very aware of the valuable services VON provided in the community, as they were a member agency for several of those years. Family members have also been grateful for the programs and services provided, whether it was for care at home while recovering from cancer, or after minor surgery, elderly parents attending the Adult Day Program, or receiving foot care. It has meant a lot to my family to have these services available, not only in Peterborough but in other communities across Ontario as well.
Giving back to the community has always been a priority for me. Over the years I have been involved on other community boards including the YWCA, Women’s Health Care Centre, Community Counselling and Resource Centre, and the Peterborough Historical Society, all of which I thoroughly enjoyed, learned so much, and always have found it to be a very rewarding experience. I am pleased to be able to give back to my community in this small way.
VON Canada has been providing services across Canada for over 100 years and in the Peterborough area for over 75 years. The staff are all so compassionate, professional and dedicated to their work, it is truly heartwarming. Who wouldn’t want to be involved with the VON!
