Her Story

Dorothy MacDonald

Victorian Order of Nurses Peterborough-Victoria-Haliburton

Dorthey's Story :

I have lived, worked, and volunteered in Peterborough since 1989. Working with the Canadian Diabetes Association and Health for Life for fifteen years complemented my attitudes to healthy living. In retirement, I continue this interest through volunteer work with VON, the Peterborough Regional Health Centre, and the East Central Therapy Dogs.

At VON, I volunteer on the Board of Directors and with the Client and Family Engagement Committees. I was asked to be on the Board because of my personal experiences interacting with the health care system. I am a fierce advocate for the rights of individuals and families to direct their own health care with all the courage and adaptability that it takes to do this. Home care must be mandated, accountable, funded and accessible to all those who chose it. VON has a dynamic, exciting vision for home care and community supports for their clients. I support the goals of this organization and enjoy using my talents and time to assist VON now and in the future.

Above all, I cherish and care most about family, friends, community, and nature. I am a proud mother of three grown children and their spouses; loving grandmother to six grandchildren. John, my best friend and husband of forty- six years, died in 2016. I spend time with my friends and neighbours, including those from Church, Soroptimist International, knitting groups, exercise classes, scrabble game and book clubs. I enjoy the outdoors while maintaining my large garden and cross country skiing.
