Her Story

Chelsea Lockhart

Project Co-Ordinator - Kawartha Lakes Construction

Chelsea's Story :

I am very grateful to be apart of the Inspire Project, and to be among some great women in our community.

Family is a big part of who I am, and they have always been supportive no matter what adventure I pursue.  I grew up in Toronto then moved to Burleigh Falls with my parents Jim and Gail and my younger sister Colleen when I was 12.

I went to Young’s Point Public School then to Lakefield High School.  After high school I attended Fleming College (Cobourg) for the Esthetician program: it was a great course and I enjoyed it a lot. Going to college and meeting new people really brought me out of my shell.  When I graduated, I was given the opportunity to work at Ste Anne’s Spa in Grafton, as well as at Salon & Spa in Lakefield.  I met a lot of wonderful and passionate people, but as much as I loved working in this industry I knew it wasn’t my only passion.

After working in the Spa/ Salon industry for a couple years I decided to go back to Fleming College (Peterborough) to take the General Construction Skills program.  Through the course I learned about Electrical, Plumbing and Carpentry trades.

When I earned my diploma, I decided to pack up my truck and I moved to Calgary, Alberta to live with my cousin, Jason. He owns a plumbing company and I worked with him as an Office Manager and plumbing assistant.  I worked with him for about a year, but decided to move back home to be closer to family.

Trying to find work when I got home was a challenge but after applying to different construction companies in the area, Kawartha Lakes Construction (KLC) hired me as a labourer.   From there I have worked my way up to a Project Coordinator in just 3 years.  I am grateful for the many opportunities that have been given to me working at KLC.  They have been very open to having a female work in the construction field with the guys.  I really enjoy my job, working as a team, meeting and working with a variety of sub trades and clients.  Bringing a project from paper, in the design stage, to building it on site and then handing the finished product over to the clients at the end is a great feeling of accomplishment.

This past summer my boyfriend, Matt and I bought our first house in Lakefield.  Our home is made complete by Malley, our Shar Pei/ Bulldog mix; she really is the best little pup.
