Aya's Story :
Hi, my name is Aya Darrouba.
I’d like to start by introducing myself. I’m a 14 year old student at Adam Scott Collegiate Vocational Institute. I’m just starting high school as I am currently in grade 9. I have one sister and three brothers. We live with our parents and we are a very happy family.
We don’t have any relatives in Canada since we are originally from Syria. Before my family came to Canada we lived in Lebanon. My sister and I are both blind so we used to go to a private school in Lebanon for the blind and deaf. When we came here, we started going to public school with sighted people and it was a very big change for us. Thankfully, I’ve made a lot of new friends here.
When I first came to Canada, I had a really hard time leaving all my family and friends. It is much easier for me now. I will admit that I miss my family a lot but I’m starting to get used to it . I really do love it here.
Canada has definitely changed me a lot.
Before I lived here I didn’t talk to people who were my age unless they went to my school. All of my friends were blind or visually impaired. Now I have friends who are sighted. I also stayed overnight at my old school and now I’m only at school six hours a day. These are a few of the changes I’ve had since moving to Canada.
I love seeing people happy. Every time I find someone sad it really makes me feel bad even if I didn’t have anything to do with it. I always try my best to make people around me smile. It makes me so happy when I make other people happy. I also love helping others if I can.
