Her Story

Emikah Taylor

Curve Lake First Nation Girl's Drumming Group

Emikah's Story :

Hello my name is Emikah Taylor.  I am 13 years old and in grade 9. I am Ojibway and Mohawk and I live in Curve Lake.

I joined the drum group so I could learn more about my culture. I have learned many things from drum group a couple examples are; how to make a drum, how to sing different songs and different teachings about our four medicines.

In drum group we have made many memories. My favourite memory is learning how to make drum something I’ve always wanted to do!

One thing that people may not know about me is I show Hereford cows in competitions.  I’ve been doing this since I was 9 years old.  Last year my parents bought me my very own Hereford, her name is Gemma and now weighs around 900 lbs.

It’s hard to choose just one thing because our world is far from perfect. One thing that would be a step in the right direction is an alert system for missing Indigenous women because Indigenous women are targeted more than any other women. Indigenous women make up 16% of all female homicides while only making up 4% of Canada’s population. Sadly sometimes there isn’t even  a police lead search party in rural areas
