Her Story

Damia Rodriguez Ramos

Onsite Office Manager/ OBSP coordinator/ RPN at Kente X-Ray and Ultrasound in Belleville

Damia's Story :

My parents, brother, sister and I came to Canada in 1989 – to the City of Belleville, Ontario.

I was a 13 year old teen from Guatemala.

As a family, we started the hard work to build a new life in our new town. My parents instilled a tireless work ethic in me and I obtained a good job. By the age of 29 I was able to buy my own home!  This felt like a big accomplishment compared to life in Guatemala when my whole family slept in the same double bed, in a room not bigger than a closet.

At the age of 35 I had a nice house and a good job, but no husband or children. My desire in life was to have a family, and there I was at 35, my internal clock was ticking, and I was worried that I might not start this new family that I had always dreamed of!  When I least expected it – I met Aramiel Rodriguez – the love of my life on a trip to Cuba. He is Cuban, but he currently lives in Spain and I in Canada.  Geography has been our problem – but not without a beautiful silver lining…

We had a wonderful daughter named Sofia 4 years ago.  She is my world! I had not experienced love at its finest until I had Sofia. God sent me the most loving child in the world! She tells me she loves me every day and holds my face in her tiny hands and tells me I am beautiful!!!!

My long distance relationship has been the hardest thing I have done to date. There was one point in our marriage where we didn’t see each other for 2 and a half years! I would not change a thing because I have Sofia. This whole process in my life has made me appreciate the little things.   I have become more compassionate and understanding. I have great appreciation for my parents – especially my mother Zoila who has been there for me every step of the way, helping me with Sofia while I work.  My relationship with God has grown a great deal.  He has been my rock and my provider. I pray for a miracle to have my husband and father to my dear Sofia together in Canada soon.
