Karen’s Words : Adventurous Tenacious Engaging
Karen’s Story :
Born and raised on a dairy farm in Peterborough County, and then marrying a farmer, agriculture has always been a big part of who I am.
While I always recognized the value of farming, I saw the true importance of agriculture when I became the 1987/88 Peterborough County Dairy Princess.
My role was to educate the general public about the importance of milk and agriculture in general.
That valuable experience taught me that many people had a knowledge gap about where their food came from.
In 2006 I worked with the Peterborough Chamber of Commerce on the Kawartha Choice FarmFresh initiative.
My heart, soul and mind returned to the career I always wanted; to promote the importance of agriculture and help it grow.
Later I joined the GPA EDC as the Agricultural Lead – Economic Development where I enjoyed bringing people together and growing our local agricultural sector within Ontario and beyond.
I loved chatting with many people, including leaders at all levels of government, sharing the importance of agriculture, understanding where our food comes from and valuing those who grow it.
Recently, as Manager, Partnership Development & Fundraising for the County of Peterborough, I was Project Lead in the design and construction of the 12,000 sqft Peterborough County Agricultural Heritage Building at Lang Pioneer Village Museum.
I know well the role agriculture has played in making Peterborough County all that it is today, so it was a privilege for me to have been involved in the construction of this replica circa 1910 barn which will continue to pay homage to the agricultural sector and tell our history with a sense of pride while also celebrating our community and future accomplishments.
With this new facility, we have made history and I am proud to be a small part of the story.
