      Carol’s  Story :

I grew up in a family that prayed to St. Anthony when you lost something.

After failing my driver’s exam twice because I couldn’t master the parallel park, my mother told me to pray to St. Jude. “He’s the saint of impossible causes.”

When I couldn’t get pregnant I asked my mother who I should pray to for help.

“Go to China and adopt a little girl.”

I listened to her and travelled halfway around the world to bring home our beautiful daughters Grace and Joan.

Sometimes we think we know what we want. And the universe has other plans for us.

My first writing assignment as an intern at Power Boating Magazine was to interview a restaurateur turned racer named Peter Groeschel. My editor Darryl Simmons was a fiend about display copy. “The shorter, the better.” He was referring to headlines. I took his words to heart and titled the feature story, “Piping Hot.”

My second article was about local realtor turned racer, Robert Wood. “What are you going to call it?” Darryl asked.

      “Solid Wood.”

Recently my colleague Reem gave me a mug with the word, “Inspire” painted on it. The note inside the package read, “Because it’s what you do.”
